The values, attitudes and behaviours of managers, supervisors and employees determine whether a team / organisation or business succeeds or fails. Bullying, harassment or discrimination can be expensive in both human costs and financial costs. Workers will not be producing their best work if they feel threatened, intimidated or angry. They will be more likely to make mistakes, and even injure themselves or others. Psychological injuries caused by workplace conflicts such as bullying and harassment are real and they are expensive in both human and financial costs. Claims for psychological injury at work have a median time lost from work of 9.7 weeks, more than double the time lost of 4.0 weeks for physical injury claims. Claims involving bullying and harassment have the greatest time lost from work (11.0 working weeks). (Australian Occupational Health and Safety Compensation Council, 2007). A positive work environment is likely to result in less absenteeism and employee turnover, better safety practices and improved staff wellbeing. Bullying research has identified key risk factors that predict the likelihood of bullying or harassment occurring in an organisation. At Aboto we can assist your management team to carry out an OHSW audit to recognise and the control the risks that are predicative of bullying and harassment. We can train staff in their responsibilities and rights, and we can train Contact Officers, in expanding their role to coach staff in conflict so that they are better skilled to manage conflicts appropriately.
