Course: A Psychologically Safe Workplace

This course is divided into two modules:

  • A Psychologically Safe Workplace – We all have the right to work in an environment that supports good psychological health. This course covers how you can be part of ensuring a safe, respectful work environment.
  • What to do if you think you have been subjected to unfair treatment, bullying, harassment, or discrimination – This course follows on from our course on your rights and responsibilities in a psychologically safe workplace and looks at your options if you feel you have been subjected to workplace bullying, sexual harassment or unlawful discrimination.

Together these two modules are designed to assist both managers and employees become familiar with their rights and respective responsibilities in preventing workplace bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment. We outline what is, and what isn’t workplace bullying, and what is meant by reasonable management actions, as well as outlining the different complaint options that can be taken, and the advantages and disadvantages of each, should an allegation of bullying, discrimination or sexual harassment be made.

We discuss that Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination are WH&S issues and that there are a range of risk factors that can be identified and mitigated in the workplace.

We use a range of typical scenarios to illustrate and test the learners understanding of the concepts.

Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Know what is meant by ‘workplace bullying’, ‘discrimination’ and ‘sexual harassment’;
  • Know what behaviours are not bullying;
  • Know why bullying, discrimination and harassment are important Workplace, Health and Safety concerns;
  • Know the difference between ‘reasonable management actions’ and ‘workplace bullying’;
  • Know what to do if you believe you are being bullied, discriminated against or sexually harassed in your workplace;
  • Understand what YOUR responsibilities are in preventing workplace bullying and harassment in your organisation;
  • Understand that there are risk factors that can either increase or decrease the psychological safety of a particular workplace.

Course: The Role of the Contact Officer

This course is designed to familiarise Contact Officers, sometimes called Fair Treatment Officers, with their role and their responsibilities as the first port of call for employees who believe they are being bullied, discriminated against or sexually harassed in the workplace. It outlines the limitations of the Contact Officer role, how Contact Officers can best support employees who may be emotionally distressed, including what information to provide them with and where to obtain extra help if required.

The course uses a range of scenarios to illustrate each point.

Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities as a Contact Officer, including the limitations of the Contact Officer role;
  • Understand different complaint options available if someone believes they are being bullied or harassed at work and the advantages and disadvantages of each option;
  • Know how to conduct the first interview with someone who believes they are being bullied or harassed;
  • Understand your responsibilities as to keeping employee confidentiality;
  • What to do if you are concerned about the safety of someone who has come to see you.
